Saleyha is an emergency medicine doctor, undertaking a PhD at the University of Cambridge examining the impact of attacks on healthcare during wars. Her project will be presented as a written thesis and feature-length documentary. She was drawn to the subject as a British Army officer on tour with NATO's SFOR in Bosnia, prior to retraining to be a doctor. She was the first British Muslim woman to attend the mixed-gender commissioning course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Saleyha gained her Masters in international human rights and humanitarian law to understand legal protections offered to healthcare workers in war. She is studying for her diploma in Global Health and Humanitarian Medicine with Doctors Without Borders. Saleyha is a trained broadcast journalist and has made several documentaries in conflict settings.
