An individuals state of health and wellness is markedly influenced by stress, and how that individual overcomes, merely manages or ultimately succumbs to such stressors. Fundamentally, human beings are exposed to various types and forms of stress in their day to day lives. These stressors can be significantly augmented in the lives of first responders. Aspects such as sleep deprivation, post-traumatic stress, poor or inadequate nutrition, environmental exposure and lack of quality exercise crucially impact the health and wellness of our first responders. The purpose of this presentation is to improve awareness of how stress uniquely affects First Responders and will outline a "Five Fundamentals" approach to improving resilience. It is essential to equip individual responders and organizations with tools and techniques to successfully mitigate daily stressors and to empower those around them to do the same.
